Theatre Royal - Brimming with history, the Theatre Royal is not only a city centre landmark but also one of the most beautiful Victorian theatres in Britain. Built in 1865 and later transformed in 1897 by renowned architect Frank Matcham, the theatre is considered to be one of the most spectacular surviving examples of Matcham’s work. In 1978, the Theatre Royal re-opened following a £5 million refurbishment, whilst today the timeless beauty of the 1,107-seat auditorium remains a vital and much-cherished part of our community.
The Theatre Royal auditorium has traditional tiered seating over four levels; the Stalls, the Dress Circle, the Upper Circle and the Balcony – each on a gentle rake. Every level has lift access but there may be restricted legroom on the Upper Circle & Balcony. There are a selection of wheelchair spaces available in the Stalls and Dress Circle and a number of Boxes at the back of the Dress Circle that are available for booking on select performances.
