Fatal Attraction @ Opera House Manchester Review

Fatal Attraction @ Opera House Manchester Review

On Tuesday we attended Fatal Attraction in Manchester -  former Corrie star Kym Marsh  took on the role of lust-crazed female predator Alex Forrest, made famous in the hit 80s film by Glenn Close. There was a fabulous turn out with many of the usual Corrie stars the audience supporting their ex-colleague!  It was never going to be an easy task translating the iconic 1980s thriller Fatal Attraction from screen to stage.

The story by James Dearden follows Alex Forrest as she becomes somewhat obsessed with Dan Gallagher (Oliver Farnworth) following a one night stand.  As married family man Dan instantly regrets his night of infidelity but Alex makes it abundantly clear that she intends to forget nothing and refuses to simply be a mistake that Dan can wish away.  All she wants is for Dan to play fair and so long as he does, he has nothing to worry about.  But who decides what is fair?  Who decides the rules?  And how can you play to win if you don’t even know you’re trapped in a game with the highest stakes possible?

Kim had some brilliant moments as Alex, and the detail she put into her performance is brilliant.  As we witnessed her first emotional struggle upon slitting her wrists, she beautifully depicted the raw emotion physically.

Farnworth had amazing energy through the whole show  - he needed it for the amount of times he took his clothes off and then put them on again!  He was on stage most of the show and as well as his character he narrated directly to the audience before jumping back into his role.  Susie Amy (Footballers Wives, Hollyoaks, Echo Beach, Wright Stuff)  played his wife Beth, John Macaulay (Waterloo Road, M.I High, Comedy Of Errors) his best friend Jimmy, and Anita Booth (Intergalactic, Vanity Fair, Mamma Mia)  his mother in law Joan. They were all very believable and the production was excellent,  keeping the whole audience gripped the whole way through - you could feel the tension and terror building the second half!

The set was so clever in creating different environments and the story was told brilliantly. Fatal Attraction gave us a really enjoyable night at the theatre!
