Franco's Italian, 5-6 Green Market, Carlisle, CA3 8JE
Franco’s Italian Carlisle is more than just a restaurant; it’s a journey through time, nestled within one of Carlisle’s most historic treasures, the Guildhall. Believed to date back to the late 14th century, this remarkable building is a testament to medieval artisanry and resilience. Built by Richard of Redeness, who bequeathed it to the city upon his death, the Guildhall features stunning Tudor architecture with upper floors that project out in the traditional style of timber-framed structures. It has borne witness to centuries of history and community life. The Guildhall, a Grade 1 Ancient Monument, served as the administrative hub of the city and the meeting place for Carlisle’s historic guilds, including the Merchants, Skinners, and Tanners. Within its walls, generations have conducted trade, governance, and even festivities, leaving behind a legacy of heritage that Franco’s is proud to honour. Inside, original wattle-and-daub walls and early timberwork evoke the charm of a bygone era, creating a dining atmosphere like no other.
