The story follows Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen, whose tender, everyday happiness is shattered when Sam is murdered in a staged mugging. Refusing to fade quietly into the afterlife, Sam lingers as a spirit, discovering that his trusted friend Carl orchestrated the crime.

With the help of Oda Mae Brown, a storefront psychic who shockingly can hear him, Sam fights to protect Molly from danger. Echoing the film’s iconic pottery-wheel romance and the ache of unfinished love, the musical blends suspense, humor, and longing, letting audiences relive that bittersweet goodbye all over again.
